We chose this lodge as an affordable way to Safari in the Amakhala from watching this on Destination Safari through WildEarth on YouTube. Firstly only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 are for the...
Four star rated Woodbury Lodge is spectacularly set against a cliff above the Bushmans River valley in the malaria free area of the Amahkala Game Reserve. One can see the many aloes growing up on the cliff as well as around the lodge. "Amakhala" - the isixhosa name for "place of many aloes" justifies the immense beauty of such a plant. Woodbury Lodge offers an intimate and tranquil experience of the Eastern Cape riverine bushveld along with diverse fauna and flora, bird, mammal and antelope species. It is the ideal place for families to relax and enjoy the bush together. Guests are often thrilled by the late afternoon sighting of the elephant herd passing by.
Woodbury Lodge consists of 6 comfortable stone-and thatch lodges, each with a private patio and magnificent view of the Amakhala Game Reserve. All the lodges have air conditioning, a spacious en suite bathroom, coffee and tea station as well as a mini bar fridge. All beds have electrical blankets to keep you warm during those cold nights. The seclusion of the lodges enables you to enjoy the unique and breathtaking views while relaxing and enjoying the sounds of the African Bush . As each lodge is hidden amongst bush, bird sightings and sounds are an everyday experience. Spectacular views can also be enjoyed from the comfort of your own bed or whilst unwinding and relaxing in the bathtub.
The 3 main aspects of any African safari are the game-viewing, the accommodation and the food - at Woodbury Lodge we take special care to ensure that heartfelt service combines with these three “ingredients” to make your African safari experience a memorable and enjoyable one.

Birdlife at Amakhala is prolific and 180 species have been recorded. Spectacular and interesting species abound which will enthrall even the casual naturalist. For the serious “birder”, specials include Knysna Turacos's, Secretary birds, Denim’s bustard, as well as an array of barbets, woodpeckers and sunbirds. Our short walking trail up the krans (cliff), provides an opportunity for you to see the reserve from a high vantage point, while coming different bird and vegetation species.
