The Highlands are made up of five different regions, Southern Highlands, Eastern Highlands, Western Highlands, Simbu Province and Enga Province. With over one million residents, the Southern Highlands is the most populous region. When visiting The Highlands, you can also experience undisturbed local culture and view ancient tribal traditions through sing alongs, celebrations that include traditional dress, songs and dancing. The local tribes garb themselves in traditional dress, wearing feathers, shells, skins, body paint and elaborate wigs. While in this region, be sure to pick up some locally-grown coffee beans to take home with you as the beans are known for being some of the highest quality produced around the world. If you’re looking to get out and explore nature, but aren’t interested in the exertion of climbing a mountain, take a trekking tour to view the wide range of biodiversity in the region and keep your eyes open for orchids and the bird of paradise.
