Local residents were concerned about the rapid depletion of wildlife in their ancestral lands due to uncontrolled hunting and cattle encroachment. As a result Moremi Game Reserve was the first reserve in Africa that was established by local residents to protect the area from declining wildlife. This personal touch has resulted in Moremi gaining the rank of one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa- possibly even the world. Moremi is a very popular destination for the self-drive camper, and is often combined with the Chobe National Park to the northeast.

Boasting one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on the continent makes for spectacular game viewing and bird watching, including all major naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region. Both Black and White Rhino have recently been re-introduced, now making the reserve a ‘Big Five’ destination.

Fly from South Africa (OR Tambo International Airport) to Maun, which is Botswana's safari capital. Maun is the centre point for all safari comings and goings in the country. Guests visiting the Moremi Game Reserve on safari will connect with a scheduled air transfer or road transfer to their safari destination in the Moremi Game Reserve. It is an area of permanent water and depending on the amount of rainfall, some camps or lodges are only accessible by air or by boat. The transfers between camps could be considered game drives, as the routes taken go through Moremi's wildlife areas.

The dry season and in particular from July – October is the best time to visit Moremi Game Reserve, as game viewing is at its peak. At this time seasonal pans dry up and the wildlife concentrates on the permanent water.

The winter months of May - August can be surprisingly very cold at night, but pleasantly warm during the day. From October until the rains come in late November or early December, the weather can be extremely hot - both day and night.
