The barren desert land of Makkah is said to have been uninhabited prior to the arrival of Abraham some 4,000 years ago. There, Abraham left is son Ismail along with his wife Hajar and as he left he supplicated to God saying “My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day.”
Makkah is refered to in the Quran and the Bible as Bakka- a location at the bottom of a valley. Until 30 years ago, the mountains that surrounded the grand Mosque had a towering presence. Today, many of those mountains have been demolished to make way for hundreds of new hotels- part of the a re-development programme of the entire haram area.
